What to look for

How to read a deck builder's reviews

Star ratings are easy. These are the things worth reading for, whoever you end up hiring.

• Does the reviewer mention the start date holding, or the crew disappearing?
• Did the permit and inspection go through, or did the homeowner find out later there wasn't one?
• Is there a review from more than a year after the build — and is the deck still solid?
• When something did go wrong, what did the contractor do about it?
